Repairing a Broken Sprinkler

Finding that you have a broken sprinkler can be frustrating. Not only does a broken sprinkler cause a lot of water consumption, but it can also cause your lawn to suffer.  When do you know you have a broken sprinkler head or if there is a more serious problem with your sprinkler system?  We can list some of the most common signs below.

Broken Sprinkler Head:

Signs that you might have a broken sprinkler head:

  • Dry spots in your lawn
  • A sprinkler that is shooting water directly up in the air
  • Water leaking from the side of the sprinkler head / pooling water.
  • Sprinkler head will not rise or pop-up.

What causes sprinkler head damage:

  • Lawn equipment is the most common reason for damage to sprinkler heads.
  • Clogged nozzles can be caused by dirt in the system
  • Poorly manufactured sprinkler head / low quality materials

You can address a broken sprinkler head by replacing the affected sprinkler head.  We recommend that you replace the sprinkler head with the same type and brand of sprinkler that is installed throughout your whole system.  We would also like to note that you might want to consider replacing all the sprinkler heads with a higher quality sprinkler head if you feel you see a lot of broken or malfunctioning sprinklers often. Using a low-quality brand of sprinkler head may end up costing you more down the line.  Some brands do not hold up to stress as well as the better-built sprinkler heads due to poor quality materials.

Broken Sprinkler Valve:

When your timer communicates with your system, it does so use the sprinkler valve box.  This is where all the control valves for your system are housed.  It is usually in a box underground.  When these valves break or get damaged it can cause some major issues with your system.

Signs of a Broken Sprinkler Valve:

  • Flooded valve box.
  • Water leaking from the valve.
  • High water bill
  • Low pressure
  • Dirt in the valve
  • Wet grass when the system hasn’t been on
  • System may go off at random times or doesn’t shut off at all.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms for a broken valve, we recommend having your system inspected.  Repairing this problem can save you money down the line as a broken valve can cause more serious issues with your system.

Broken Pipes:

You might have a more serious issue with your system if you experience:

  • low pressure in your system.
  • water is not coming out of the sprinkler heads.
  • lump in your lawn, or a soggy lawn in certain areas of your yard
  • Multiple areas that are not sufficiently being watered.

This might mean you have a leak in a pipe or line that is underground.  Unfortunately, with a lot of your system being underground it can be hard to diagnose where the leak is coming from without digging.  Broken pipes can cause a lot of water consumption and waste, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms with your system, it is recommended that you get the problem addressed promptly.
